Visiting your gynecologist can be awkward and embarrassing – but it doesn't have to be.
Going to the doctor’s office is rarely fun, let alone the gynecologist’s office, where everything can be just a little too up close and personal.
You probably feel like there are things that you wouldn’t consider telling your best friend, how could you tell it to a complete stranger? But the truth is, they’ve heard it all and seen it all. They are there for your benefit and to help you take care of your sexual and reproductive health.
Here’s a list of things you should tell your gyno, whether they ask or not. It will make the appointment easier for both of you and more worth your time. Plus, being prepared with answers in advance will save you some discomfort or embarrassment.
Disclose How Many Sexual Partners You’ve Had And Any Unprotected Sex
No one is judging! They need to know this information from a medical standpoint. The more information you give them, the more they can target your exact needs. If you’ve had unprotected sex or forgot to use protection, let them know, regardless if you think everything is okay or if you haven't noticed signs of an STD. Not all STDs have signs and symptoms, and others like HPV can lay dormant for years.
Discuss Your Sex Life
No, you don’t have to go into detail, but your gyno can help with sexual dysfunction issues. They know what you are working with and can most likely help you out. Having orgasm issues is something that may require a referral, or it could be a sign that something else is going on. If sex is painful or you occasionally bleed after sex, that’s another thing you should bring up. If it happens more than once or twice, it could mean an infection or dryness problem.
Talk About Your Period
If your period cycle has been a little off lately, you might as well bring it up since you are there. If your flow is heavier or lighter than usual or if you are always early or late, they may be able to help. It could be something such as hormonal imbalances, a cyst or an infection.
Come Clean About Funky Smells
Sometimes smells come and go, but it’s usually a sign of an infection or pH imbalance that is treatable. It’s common for there to be a minor odour around the time of menstruation, but if it’s super off, you're best off talking to someone who can help.
Just remember, it’s always better to be safe than embarrassed.
