Before you take home improvement matters into your own hands, look at these do's and don'ts.
Television channels dedicated to home improvement programs like HGTV make DIY projects look simple and convenient. While DIY projects are a great way to be financially resourceful, certain tasks are easier said than done.
It's important to properly evaluate the safety risks, hidden costs, and time delays before attempting certain tasks, as remodeling industry professionals reportedly gain 30 percent of their work from fixing homeowners DIY disasters. Here are the top DIY do’s and don’t for homeowners.
Paper or Paint Your Walls
This task is simple, fun as well as safe and budget friendly. Apply self-adhesive and repositionable wallpaper behind your bedframe, or in a bathroom, using the outline of your mirror as inspiration to create a curvy top edge.
Patch Holes in Walls
If you have holes in your walls, don't worry as it is an easy task to fix. All you need is a surfacing compound and a putty knife to repair minor wall holes from nails. For larger problems, spread an all-purpose drywall compound over an adhesive patch over the hole with a trowel. Let the compound dry overnight, then paint over the patch once it's dry.
Replace Your Shower head
A quick way to save money is by replacing your shower head with a low-flow unit. If your shower head flow is low when it shouldn't be, make sure to check if the holes are clogged by hard-water deposits.
Cleaning Air-Ducts
Cleaning your air ducts is a necessity as you want to keep allergens and mold from entering the air in your home, especially if you have had a previous rodent or insect infestations.
If the airways are old, then their is a risk of the insulation containing asbestos, which is a major health risk. It is better to leave this one to the professionals, but make sure to be informed of what disinfectant sprays are needed.
Fixing Your Roof
It is recommended that you get your roof examined every 5 years to be proactive towards discovering any damage before you start to see leaks coming through the ceiling.
It is best to hire a professional to examine the roof and help you with repairs that will cost you a few hundred, rather than a replacement if delayed could end up costing you thousands.

Electrical Systems
Electrical systems are best left to the professionals, as this is a task that is unsafe to tackle if you are not sure what to do. Electricians can help you with breakers, electrical outlets, switches, and sockets.
Leaky Faucets
If you have a leaky faucet, it is an easy DIY. Turn the water off and stop the drain with a rag to prevent losing small parts while dismantling the faucet. A washer-less faucet can be stopped by a new O-ring.
