In 10 Days Gaza Reaches 58K Children Hit By “Death, Injury or Loss of Home.”
The Israeli strike on Gaza has turned into a war against children, as the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs stated on Friday that the Gaza conflict is affecting tens of thousands of children. They had posted a tweet that states “57,900 children in Gaza who have experienced death, injury or loss of home over past 10 days require psychosocial support.”
Estimates state that one in five Palestinian deaths in Operation Defense Edge has been a child, the reason being that half of the Strip’s population is under the age of 18, with the median age being just 18 and a few months.
This means that the majority of the population of Gaza is children. Gaza has the 35th highest birth rate in the world at 1.8 million people, with an infant mortality rate just slightly higher than China.
Statistics show that the birth rate is four children per women, which means that every generation it double’s the population, as well as making the population younger. This explains why 40 percent of the population is 14 years and younger.
UNICEF stated that half of the children who had died during Gaza’s Operation Defensive Age were under the age of 12, with the youngest being reportedly three months old.
On June 16, the Israeli strike on Gaza killed four Palestinian boys while playing football on a beach. Three other children were also injured, with one in critical condition. The attack appeared to be from the Israeli naval shelling near the port area of Gaza City. NBC News was witness to the attack as the children were playing soccer with the journalists earlier on.
On June 17, three more children were killed in Gaza. Israeli forces had launched a ground invasion of Gaza, which has led to a 10 day campaign to destroy Hamas’ rocket-firing, as well as the tunnels used to infiltrate Israel by militants.
A senior army official said in response to the deaths of women and children that the military was “sorry”, and that “when you fight there are mistakes.”
On July 18, Madeleine al Tawil’s stomach was ripped open by shrapnel from an Israeli bomb. The 12 year old was rushed to Shifa Hospital, and is sustaining injuries. She spoke to NBC, stating “We’re stronger than the Israelis. They’re fighting against us, they think they are stronger. But we are stronger than they are.”
July 20 saw the deadliest single day in Gaza as more than 100 Palestinians were killed according to Palestinian health officials. Sunday afternoon, rescue workers had to leave the sight as it was too dangerous for them to stay, yet returned later with a bulldozer to rescue three people trapped underneath the rubble.
A group of Palestinian rights groups and aid agencies, as well as international urged for an immediate cease fire in Gaza for the high number of children being killed in crossfire. A statement was released on the 19th from the groups that “so far, more children have been killed by Israeli fire than Palestinian militants.”
