The World Partnership Walk marks its 30th anniversary this year with walks across Canada starting May 25.
As Canada’s largest annual event dedicated to increasing awareness and raising funds to fight global poverty, the World Partnership Walk is held each year in 10 cities across the country. The walk is an initiative by Aga Khan Foundation Canada, a non-profit international development agency working in Asia and Africa to find sustainable solutions to the complex problems causing global poverty.
Since its inception 30 years ago, the annual event has raised more than $82 million for international development programs, with 100 percent of funds raised going directly toward initiatives that include poverty alleviation, health, education, rural development and supporting community-based organizations.
This year’s 30th anniversary walk of the Toronto chapter will kick off from David Pecaut Square at Metro Hall on May 25. Both Vancouver and Victoria are also set to kick off then also. Other Canadian city dates are:
Sunday, June 1, 2014
Montreal | Ottawa | Regina
Sunday, June 8, 2014
Calgary | Edmonton | Kitchener-Waterloo | London
Thousands of people from all walks of life will join the event to do their part in fighting for the survival of some of the world’s most vulnerable communities.
Sangita Patel, entertainment reporter for ET Canada who is co-hosting the Toronto chapter walk, says, “World Partnership Walk has been providing the fundamentals for survival for so many people around the world over the years, and to be part of an event that makes a difference means so much to me. There is no excuse for poverty.”
Rehana, a mother & walk ambassador who has been doing the walk for years, is looking forward to participating again. “We started doing the walk in 2010 with strollers and wagons and now our little ones are walking and running the whole way!" she says. "We come together with a lot of love, a bit of effort and a strong desire to make a difference.”
Returning co- host for Toronto, Huse Madhavji, the noted Canadian actor, claims this walk as his favourite charitable event to appear at. “I've been hosting the World Partnership Walk in Toronto since 2006 and it is by far my favourite event to host!
Just the idea of thousands and thousands of Canadians coming together across the country, helping to make this world a better place, makes this one of the most inspiring events. Plus, the food, the entertainment and the incredible volunteers make it so much fun!
With a wide range of entertainment and fun activities for the whole family, the walk is a great opportunity to come together for one cause and help those in need.
