“The World Before Her” Set To Create Waves During Indian National Elections
Filmmaker Nisha Pahuja gears up for the Indian release of her controversial and award winning documentary The World Before Her .
The film, which opened and won the documentary competition at the Tribeca Film Festival and Hot Docs Film Festival, examines the fascinating worlds of the Miss India Pageant and a Hindu Nationalist camp for girls run by Durga Vahini, the women’s wing of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad.
The film is making movements at a critical time in India’s political race and could become a topic as India gears up for the national elections in April and May.

Releasing the film in India has proved daunting with the films controversial content. Pahuja speaks on behalf of her decision to release the film in India and states “I don’t want the film to be appropriated by rival political parties but I also know if we don’t get it out now, it will be banned. No question. And I know it needs to be seen here. Every festival audience in India has insisted we release the film on a large scale and after the Delhi gang rape, I became determined to make that happen.”
Supporting Nisha Pahuja’s efforts are Oscar nominated filmmaker Deepa Mehta and actors Lisa Ray and Nandita Das, a trio of three powerful women.
The two actresses, Ray and Das, have starred in Mehta’s famous “Elements Trilogy” FIRE; EARTH; WATER, all of which have ignited controversy in India. All three films touched on the topic of the mistreatment of women in India.
Mehta says in her decisions to support Pahuja, “I loved Nisha’s film. It is powerful, heartbreaking and extremely important for India. The complexities of being a woman in this country are beautifully delineated. The film couldn’t come at a more key time—as India struggles both with women’s rights and the inevitability of a growth in Hindu extremism.”
Similar comments were made by Das saying: "The World Before Her is powerful, insightful and poignant. It's very telling of our times and the complexities we need to deal with, especially in the area of gender empowerment. It’s wonderfully made with some very interesting characters. I think often fiction is unable to keep pace with reality, and this documentary is a great example of that. We need good engaging documentaries in this country and we need to give them their due place."

As part of the film’s release in India, Pahuja will travel and screen the films across India in schools, colleges and areas where rates of female feticide and infanticide are high or on the rise.
Accompanying her will be human rights activists and some of the women in the film including former Miss India Pooja Chopra, who herself was to be killed at birth for being a girl.
