It’s 2014 and time to hold yourself to that promise to read more, and watch less television. That’s the bad news, at least for some. The good news is that you can reward yourself with the treat of seeing your book in theaters. Even if you are the sort of bookworm that hates the movie version, consider this a race to the finish line because you know that your movie-going friends are bound to ruin the ending…
For Her:
Winter’s Tale by Mark Helprin
What it’s about: Orphan and middle-aged Irish mechanic Peter Lake attempts to rob a Manhattan mansion only to find the home occupied by the lovely but fatally ill Beverly Penn. In this Edwardian tale, Peter’s attempt to stop time for the sake of their love, means a neverending winter. And so begins the epic romance in a magical and wintry New York City, wholly different than our own…
When it hits theaters: February 14th, watch Colin Farrel (Peter) and Jessica Brown Findlay (Beverly) build a love that transcends time in the film version of this New York Times bestseller. This is the perfect day to cozy up to your special someone and enjoy this tale of fantasy and romance.
For Him:
The Monuments Men by Robert M. Edsel
What it’s about: This book is based on the quiet heroes of World War II: the museum curators, art historians, unarmed special forces and others, the many “Monuments Men” who risked their lives by staying a step ahead of the Nazis to save pieces of priceless art that, in their quest for world domination and a rewrite of civilization, the Nazis had planned to destroy. The book focuses on the stories of six Monuments Men in the time between D-Day and V-Day and their race against the clock and behind enemy lines to save thousands of years of culture. A win-win for World War Two and War buffs as well as gentle art lovers, thisbook transforms art into adventure, and might make you think twice before you turn down another trip to the museum.
When it hits theaters: This movie opens on February 7th with a star-studded cast including George Clooney, Matt Damon, John Goodman, Bill Murray, Cate Winslet, Jean Dujardin, and Hugh Bonneville. We have a win-win situation as we look forward to seeing this epic cast fight the Nazis with good art.
For Teens:
Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead
What it’s about: One of six books, Richelle Meade has done her homework, capturing Romanian folklore, Orthodox Catholic saints, and the social angst and sexual tension that every teenager can appreciate in this book that leaves Twilight in the dust. Lissa Dragomir, Moroi princess and (good) mortal vampire, has the rare power to harness the earth’s magic. Her best friend, Rose Hathaway, is half human and half vampire, a powerful Dhampir, and it her mission to protect Lissa from Strigoi, the dangerous vampire immortals who want to make Lissa one of their own. After escaping St. Vladimir’s Academy for dhampirs and moroi for two years the girls are brought back to face the mystery of Lissa’s power and its danger.
When it hits theaters: Created by the makers of Mean Girls, this flick starring Zoey Deutch (Rose), Lucy Fry (Lissa), and Sarah Hyland (Natalie) will be released on February 14th, just in time for Valentine’s Day and the perfect time for some neck nibbling in the dark.
