Working from home is becoming an increasingly popular trend these days. In a study by Regus cited by 'The Huffington Post Canada', it was revealed that more than 26,000 senior managers and business owners in 90 countries, have stated that about 50% of their employees work from home at least half of the week.
Due to the overwhelming popularity, it's no wonder that Yahoo CEO, Marissa Mayer's ban on employees working from home was met with criticism, sturring debate.
Working from home does have its advantages of course. A 2009 Cisco Study claimed that telecommuting significantly increased employee productivity, work-life flexibility and job satisfaction. That said, we can't ignore the obstacles that need to be overcome in order to make working from home a fulfilling experience.
Here's a look at the challenges you could face while working from home:
Caught Between Two Worlds
Working from home can be extremely challenging as it completely dilutes the boundaries between the personal and the professional.
There are times when it becomes almost impossible to prioritize responsibilities and you get stuck between work and home. Although it is compensated with all the time and money you would otherwise spend on travelling to and from the workplace, it requires immense self-discipline to create a balance between the two important aspects of your life.
Endless Distractions
When you work from home there are good chances that you don’t have a cubicle or an isolated space where you can shut yourself out of the countless distractions you’re sure to encounter. Having a space set out for you to work undisturbed is an essential prerequisite of working from home.
Erratic Working Hours
When you go out to work you’re bound by the clock. You leave home at a fixed time and return at a fixed time too. But working from home often means you cannot depend on the clock for starting or wrapping up your work. There are days when you may have to work late into the night. And the worst part is, more often than not, there’s no one to notice. But don't be disheartened as there might also be days (no matter how few) when you wouldn't need to slog as much, owing to the flexibility of your schedule.
Where’s The ‘Me’ Time
Working-from-home usually translates into working-at-home as you always find yourself working. If you aren’t looking at a work-related assignment, you are managing a domestic chore. Going to the office ensures that you take full care of yourself – the way you look, the way you dress – and instantly adds a feel-good factor to your routine. Working from home completely takes that away from you. However, on days when you aren't really in the mood to dress up working in your pjs is a definite boon.
You Miss Social Interaction
One of the major cons of not going to the office is that you don’t get to interact with people as much as you’d like to. It is believed that man is a social animal. Working from home turns you into a tortoise. You have to stay in your shell peeking out just momentarily, which could cause frustration.
Despite its cons, working from home is an option many find convenient particularly new moms who can spend more time with their little ones while staying on top of their professional lives too.
At the end of the day it's just a matter of what's convenient for you, your lifestyle and most often than not the type of work you do.
