Indian Fashion Designers Shine At New York Fashion Week

We look back at New York Fashion Week , in particular the designers of Indian origin who took it by storm and the Indian narrative that was evident on the runway. Bibhu Mohapatra, Naeem Khan and Falguni and Shane Peacock showcased their latest creations at the recently concluded New York Fashion Week while a trip to India became a source of inspiration for designer Donna Karan.

Naeem Khan

We start out with the couturier Naeem Khan's show, which as always attracts a slew of celebrity sightings. Author, actress, model and television host, the stunning Padma Lakshmi was spotted wearing an elegant shift dress.

Naeem Khan's Spring 2014 collection was an inspiration of the Spanish Rose. The Latin culture, full of romance and rich in vibrant colours were all evident. The collection, heavy in prints, stylish separates and feminine silhouettes, possessed variety. What really set this collection apart for us was the intricate lace detail that was noted in the embroidery and beadwork of the pieces.
The finale wedding gown that featured a chapel length veil and announced Naeem Khan's foray into the soon-to-be launched bridal line.

Bibhu Mohapotra

Indian American designer Bibhu Mohapatra follows the footsteps of Oscar de la Renta and Bill Blass with his feminine designs showcased in his spring collection last Wednesday.

Mohapatra, primarily an evening wear designer was seen to branch out more into daywear. Sleeveless, micro-pleated, pink and floral silk twill shirt-dress were among the key pieces presented on the runway. Black-ponte trousers with inverted pink side pleats, worn with a sleeveless pink floral blouse were definitely an eye-catcher.

A fuchsia one-shoulder embroidered stretch faille cocktail dress with draped skirt made a fab transition from day wear to the designer’s signature evening wear.

Falguni & Shane Peacock

Falguni & Shane, the designer duo created quite a stir with their new fall collection. Using feminine, tribally-infused print and of course their signature use of feathers and sequins made the perfect collection for any extrovert.

Onlookers enjoyed a sense of fantasy from the silhouettes that were infused with embellishments and print.

Donna Karan

Donna Karan's Spring/Summer 2014 collection was an array of classic Karan ideas. From day-to-night stretch dress coats to menswear-inspired tailoring in hues of tobacco, terra-cotta and navy.

Opening the show was a series of indigo-colored viscose dresses, followed by beaded, wrap miniskirts with silk tunics barely tucked into the waistband.

The stand out piece was the scarf skirt, light and full of character. The inspiration as stated earlier, came from a trip to the motherland where a scarf she had spotted took her on a journey to India, returning with a suitcase full of new ones.
