Famed for their socially inclined music, Mumbai’s progressive rock outfit, Coshish has released its debut album 'Firdous' under Universal Music India, on September 1, 2013.
The label has previously released albums by other critically acclaimed artists and bands including Euphoria, Rabbi Shergill, Lesle Lewis, Jal The Band and Indus Creed.
There are concept albums and then there are albums like 'Firdous', the debut full-length by prog/alt rock band Coshish, which follows the story of a protagonist on his journey to attain nirvana. If you rip the CD and rearrange the songs according to hints and clues in the artwork, you can listen to the album, as 'one giant track,' according to drummer Hamza Kazi, who is also part of comedy rock band Workshop.
Coshish has done everything from all-night video shoots to carefully placing hidden clues to an alternate track list in their album inlay. For their launch gig next month, they’ve made sure they have a visual projector that is synced to click with their instruments. The band’s spent nearly two years recording, producing and packaging the album, even signing on to Universal Music for a nationwide release on September 2nd.
'Firdous' is an album consisting of ten tracks that document the life of a seemingly ordinary young man and his transition into becoming a self aware being, free from the ties of the material world. The CD contains photographs and handwritten lyrics behind them which are part of a puzzle in which listeners need to piece together the correct order of songs in the story.
Drawing inspiration from bands like Tool, Porcupine Tree, Opeth, Pain of Salvation, etc. Coshish’s music has a strong western influence. “We made it our goal not to write random songs and to find a way to connect them, meaningfully. We really wanted to do something unique and so far, we’re glad to see it getting a good response.”
The album has been produced, recorded and mixed by Zorran Mendonsa (New Zealand), mastered by Jens Bogren (Sweden). Additional sounds and samples were recorded at Rattlehead Studio. The album artwork was created by Bernard Dumaine (France) and Daeve Fellows (Canada) along with additional art by Imran Ladak (India).
Coshish consists of Mangesh Gandhi (vocals, rhythm guitars), Shrikant Sreenivasan (lead guitars), Hamza Kazi (drums) and Anish Nair (bass). The band has been active since 2006 and has been featured on MTV's Rock On, NDTV and Channel [V] India's V Gumrah. Coshish has performed at several prestigious festivals across India including Storm Festival, IIT Madras, IIT Roorkee, The Blue Frog, IIT Mumbai and VCET.
Coshish was voted as the Top 5 Headlining Act and Most Featured Band of Season 10 by UTV Bindass TV.
The band will be touring throughout India and has announced the Mumbai dates for the first leg of their tour. The dates for Pune, Chennai, Trivandrum, Bangalore, Delhi and Hyderabad will be announced soon.
The album will be launched on September 11, 2013 at Blue Frog, Mumbai. Bands like Blakc and Paradigm Shift will also be performing at the event.
Firdous CDs are available in Planet M stores all over India, as well as online on Flipkart, WebmallIndia, Infibeam, Landmark, Hungama, Nokia Music Store, iTunes and Amazon.
