TD Mosaic 2013 which takes place on Friday, August 16 to August 18, 2013 and founded by Arshad Mahmood, is the largest FREE South Asian arts, culture, and heritage festival in North America. The festival not only features a comedy night but also an incredible main stage, youth stage, commercial vendors, food and for all you movie goers out there, a film festival too.
MOSAIC’s vision is “ to provide a platform for independent, conscientious, diverse South Asian cinema. We aim to represent 'new wave' Canadian and International film in long form and short form fiction and documentary.
We want Mississauga to be the hub for interaction and engagement of the wider South Asian Diaspora as well as the crossover market that will enjoy these films. We hope to nurture a cinephile culture that is truly representative of the ascent of South Asian cinema as it celebrates its centenary.”
The Mosaic South Asian film festival serves to complement the South Asian Heritage festival to highlight the best of the South Asian Diaspora worldwide. According to the festival’s official website, MISAFF is a festival that features the best of South Asian new wave cinema. The MOSAIC festival has tremendously grown over the years and promises to deliver thought-provoking new age cinema, documentaries, and shorts from all around the world.
Among the numerous films that will be shown over the course of three days, the highlight of the film festival is the Indo-Pakistani collaboration
It is no coincidence that both films premiere and are being screened as a gesture to celebrate the Independence Day for both countries. The film festival also recognizes international talent and features films, documentaries, and shorts from all the over the world including countries such as Canada, the US, the UK, Denmark, and Trinidad. The film stars Riz Khan, Kate Hudson, Liev Schrieber, Om Puri, and Kiefer Sutherland.
Samir Kakkad’s Aayna ka Baayna, a Marathi non-stop dance film will also be featured during the festival. The film illustrates a coming-of-age tale of nine boys who find their identities through street dance.
Avinash Singh’s Listen…Amaya explores love, life, and the complexities and nuances of mother-daughter relationships. The treatment of the film is the work of well-known veteran actors Deepti Naval and Farooq Sheikh. The film has also been screened at London Asian Film Festival and Chicago South Asian Film Festival.
Two significant documentaries entitled These Birds Walk by Omar Malik and Chuppan Chuppai (Hide and Seek) will also be featured at the festival.
While the first film illustrates the life of Abdul Sattar Eidhi and his humanitarian work in his native Pakistan, the latter film deals with Lahore’s LGBT community told by the people highlighting the candid and raw depictions of LGBT people living in the highly homophobic and conservative country.
Film Festival Director Arshad Khan said, “The themes that dominate the festival this year are women's empowerment, political action, human rights, poverty, youth and sexuality. These are extremely relevant to the times we live in and have universal appeal no matter where we live or come from. This is a perfect match for the multicultural fabric which makes up not only Mississauga but the GTA as well.”
