Indian Cinema At 66th Cannes Festival

The emerging presence of Indian superstars at the 66^th Cannes Film Festival is not only inevitable but essential.

2013 has been a remarkable year for Indians worldwide for two special reasons: the Indian Film Industry celebrated its 100 years with Bombay Talkies and Monsoon Shootout and India’s own superstar Amitabh Bachchan has made his Hollywood debut as Meyer Wolfsheim in Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby.

Amitabh Bachchan, Vidya Balan, Sonam Kapoor, and Frieda Pinto walked the red carpet at the famous Grand Theatre Lumier in Cannes representing the South Asian community at the Cannes festival.
It is no surprise then that in the 100 years since its inception, the Indian cinema industry has made its home in the hearts of millions of international viewers worldwide and this speaks to the achievement of lifelong dedication and commitment to the industry.
During the opening ceremony, Bachchan shared his megastar aura in the presence of Jury President, Steven Spielberg and Jury members Nicole Kidman and Daniel Auteuil and thanked the festival for inviting India as a country of honor in France. However, his fashion style choices have been rather flamboyant than his co-stars at the festival. At the photo call, he wore a striped jacket with white pants. And for the premiere, he wore a black sequin tuxedo jacket with a surprising polka-dot bow tie drawing attention of millions on his unique fashion choices to say the least.

The gorgeous women: Vidya Balan, Sonam Kapoor, and Frieda Pinto – on the other hand – kept their fashion choices simple, demure, and memorable. While Balan wore a white Sabayaschi Lehanga with traditional printed black borders at the premiere on the first day.

Sonam Kapoor opted to wear Anamika Khanna’s off-white sari which she wore a traditional nose ring from her mother’s jewelry collection and an embroidered golden jacket.
Frieda Pinto chose to don a fuscia-pink halter Gucci gown on the red carpet. While Pinto and Kapoor were in attendance as ambassadors of L’Oreal, the official sponsor of the festival, Balan was among the eight members of jury panel, led by Steven Spielberg, who will decide at the end of the twelve-day festival who wins the Palme d’Or for the best picture, an award that is most sought after outside of the Oscars.

The presence of India will be at the heart of the festival events this year with the screenings of Amit Kumar’s directoral debut, Monsoon Shootout, which is nominated to win a Camera d’Or this year. Bombay Talkies, a collection of short films made by Karan Johar, Zoya Akhtar, Anurag Kashyap, and Dibaker Banerjee will be screened to honor India. The Cannes Classic section will feature a restored Satyajit Ray’s Charulata alongside Anurag Kashyap’s Ugly and Ritesh Batra’s Dabba that will be shown at different sections of the festival. Since the 100 years of Indian cinema, which began with Dadasaheb Phalke (Raja Harishchandra, 1913), Cannes festival’s tribute to the industry is testament to the success Indian films have achieved at a global level.
