Keep your coif cool while the temps rise!
What's the best way to transition hair from cooler spring months to hot summer days?
The first step is to speak to your stylist and discuss the products that you should use to nourish the hair during the summer. The dry heat, excess moisture and damaging sunrays call for a special arsenal of hair care goods. From there, it is always a great idea to find creative ways to style the hair during the warmer months. For instance, if your mane is long, lush and textured with curls or waves, pulling the hair back with a loose ponytail, simple bun or braid allows you to add novelty and chicness to your appearance. If your hair is long and sleek, you can always keep it looking fresh with a sleek ponytail, a braid or a topknot. If your haircut is shorter (pixie or bob), pulling the hair back will show off your best accessory – the face. For shorter hair, try an edgy or polished pompadour.
What's the trick to working with excessively oily hair in the summer?
The first weapon that fights flattened oily hair is a GREAT haircut! Lifeless hair that has little to no layers will not result in movement, bounce or fullness. Small layers (inside and out) can add a much-needed amount of fullness to the hair.
Keep the hair clean! If your hair cannot be washed daily, use a dry shampoo that is colorless and weightless. Most dry shampoos can leave a slight amount of film. Test a small, inconspicuous area of the hair to see how the hair reacts to the spray. Volumizing foams may work, but most mousse or foam products may cause dryness.
Don't rub the hair from the scalp down – the oils from your hands and the natural oils on your scalp will travel down the shaft and result in limp, lifeless hair.
And for oily bangs?
Thoroughly washing your face. If you have oily skin, the oils will cause your bangs to become stringy and oily. If you don't have products that control oil, use oil-absorbing sheets to control the secretion of oil.
Spraying a brush with dry shampoo and brushing it a few hours out of the day will help. Spray dry shampoo under the bang OR brush bangs back, spray and then style forward.
Don't touch your bangs! Moving it away from the face will add oils and dirt from your hands. Use a clean styling tool to adjust bangs. If you pull the bangs back throughout the day, do not let them rest against the rest of your mane, especially if your hair hasn't been cleansed.
A lot of women also have to deal with frizzy hair when it gets humid out – any tips?
I suggest not using any smoothing treatment, especially Keratin or Japanese straightening/smoothing treatments, as they are too drying and damaging due the higher amounts of formaldehyde.
Stock up on frizz-free products that have ingredients that block moisture from the hair. Today, most serums and holding sprays block humidity. Look for products that have organic oils that will act as a weightless shield.
Always add a drop of serum to damp hair before blow-drying. A small amount goes a long way as it seals the cuticle before the styling process.
What's your favourite hair trend for the summer season?
A sexy blowout that mimics natural beach waves.
What's your least favourite summer hair trend?
Natural hairstyles. I say this because going natural requires the right cut, great products and maintenance. Most women misconstrue the natural concept and they don't take the time to care for the hair even though they aren't applying heat to it. No matter what, all hairstyles need to be properly cared for.
What are some good hairstyles that busy women can try when it's especially hot out?
Pull it back. Find the right looks for your face shape by adding a centered part, swept bangs or deep side part. This style is elegant and easy to style.
