The 2nd Annual Indie Meme Film Festival Is The Place For Cool South Asian Indie Films

Looking for some cool alternative indie film fare? Well, this Texas-based film festival is the one for you!

#IMFF2017 kicks off tomorrow in Austin, Texas, after a successful round in 2016. Film buffs can check out 15 features, documentaries and short films that will tickle their fancy.

It all began when the Indie Meme team came together with a desire to showcase thought-provoking films and encourage independent filmmakers who would otherwise not get the platform they deserve.

The team carefully curates a selection of films and is dedicated to showcasing content that reflects the reality of South Asians from every corner of the world.

The festival runs from April 20 to 23 and will highlight meaningful films from India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, and Nepal.

Tomorrow will be an exclusive “Meme-e-Night,” including a free screening and mixing with the filmmakers for Indie Meme members, sponsors and supporters of the festival.

Members will get to check out Shor Se Shuruaat, made up of seven short films sharing the theme of “noise.” The film’s directors received mentoring by leading filmmakers like Mira Nair and Zoya Akhtar.

Friday, April 21st, marks the official opening night for #IMFF2017 — complete with the glitz and glamour of red carpets, flashing cameras and filmmakers.

Festivalgoers will get to catch the Texas premiere of An Insignificant Man, which follows the birth of India’s newest political force, Arvind Kejriwal.

The screening also includes a Q&A with filmmakers Vinay Shukla and Khushboo Ranka, followed by the opening night party for members at Manuel’s, a luxurious Mexican restaurant.

Leeches is about a young woman who tries to save her younger sister from being a “one-day bride” with an archaic remedy claiming to restore a girl’s virginity.

Parting is Afghanistan’s official submission for the Best Foreign Language Film category of the Academy Awards 2017.

The Cinema Travellers was made over five years. It pays homage to old movie projectors and how they’re still (somewhat) functional pieces of equipment. The documentary was spun off of award-winning photographer Amit Madheshiya’s 2010 work.

Harikatha Prasanga (“Chronicles of Hari”) is the transgender tale of Hari, who plays female roles in traditional Indian theatre. Hari ends up feeling trapped between two sexual identities. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with filmmaker Ananya Kasaravalli.

Phobia is a psychological thriller revolving around a young artist (Radhika Apte) suffering from the repercussions and mental scars of sexual abuse.

The Robe is a short film that tells the story of a monk during the 2007 Saffron Revolution in Myanmar. The monk learns that people are not always as they seem when he finds himself at the doorstep of a Muslim woman.

Deepak Rauniyar‘s White Sun follows a former Maoist rebel’s painful past and reintegration into a Nepali community still wounded from a decade-plus-long civil war.

Mukti Bhawan (“Hotel Salvation“) is an interplay between life and death, family relationships and salvation. The film revolves around a son and his ageing father, who demands to go and die in the holy city of Varanasi.

Banned in India, Lipstick Under My Burkha has gained eligibility for screening at the Golden Globe Awards. The film chronicles the secret lives of four women desiring freedoms of all kinds.
