Vancouver International Bhangra Celebration (VIBC) Society is hosting its ninth annual City of Bhangra festival from May 30th to June 18th, 2013. For the second time, HSBC Bank Canada will be the title sponsor of the event. The festival is an inclusive event and an opportunity for the entire community in Vancouver and Surrey to come together as they dance to the melodious rhythm of Bhangra music performed by International artists from US, UK, and India.
Downtown Bhangra will feature Sunil Kalyan, DJ Anjali, Incredible Kid, DJ Harpz, Gupsy Aujla, Inder Kooner, raw folk singer Saini Surinder all from UK, who will perform on June 7 and 8 on the north plaza at the main stage of the Vancouver Art Gallery. Finland’s only Bhangra group Shava will also be performing at the festival! Master of Repercussion, Sunil Kalyan will perform with Re-Percussion on May 30th to launch the festival at the Fei and Milton Wong Experimental Theatre at SFU Woodward’s Goldcorp Centre for the Arts in Vancouver, and June 6 at the Surrey Arts Centre.

Downtown Bhangra will also feature Bhangra teams from all over North America: Anakh-e-Gabroo (AEG), Bhangra Knightz, Cornell Bhangra, UNC Bhangra Elite, Gajjde Punjabi, GHG Bhangra, UBC Bhangra Team, UFV Bhangra Club, Surrey Folk Bhangra Club, Vancity Boys Bhangra, Shan-E-Punjab Arts Club, Jawani Bhangra, South Asian Arts and the HSBC Bhangra Team!
AEG and Cornell Bhangra call New York their home. While Cornell Bhangra has been established since 1997, AEG was formed in 2007. AEG is an all male dance-troupe that represents the tri-state New York area and has performed both nationally and internationally for four years making them strong contributors to the their culture, community, and Bhangra! Cornell Bhangra’s dance team holds the largest Bhangra exhibition – Pao Bhangra. California’s Bhangra Knightz hold a love for their traditional folk dance, hold numerous awards, and have established themselves as one of the top teams in the competitions.
UNC Bhangra Elite belong to the University of North Carolina and aim to spread cultural awareness through dance across all of the East Coast. First-Class Bhangra prides itself for having members who belong to over eight states and three countries. GHG Bhangra is devoted to the arts of Bhangra and is inspired by the Gurusar Sadhar Kalsa College Bhangra (GHG) team in Punjab.
The festival will begin on May 30th with repersussion followed by lunch on June 3rd for an afternoon performance on south stairs of Vancouver Arts Gallery with Mohammed Assani and Sunny Matharu.
