"The 71st Annual Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s Lee Daniels’ The Butler Golden Globe Awards," as the comedic duo intro'd the Golden Globes. That's right, for a second consecutive year Tina Fey and Amy Poehler killed it!
The duo were warmly welcomed by what they called "high-wattage, mega A-list" crowd. In the intro monologue the stars that were up for rosting were Tom Hanks, Matt Damon, George Clooney, Julia Louis- Dreyfus, Matthew McConaughey and Martin Scorsese, as well as themselves.
“Gravity is nominated for best film. It’s the story of how George Clooney would rather float away into space and die than spend one more minute with a woman his own age,” Tina said. In one skit, Amy played dress up as Tina's son in mini-tuxedo and a hair flip while going around the audience insisting to know who 'his' father was.
It was a good night to be Amy Poehler for sure. Not only did she co-host a second year in a row, she also won the 'Best Actress – TV Musical or Comedy' award for 'Parks and Recreation' and got a shoulder rub and a makeout session with Bono for good measure.
This year's winner of the HFPA's lifetime achievement honour, the Cecil B. DeMille Award, was iconic New York director Woody Allen, who, not surprising was a no show. Long time friend and collaborator, Diane Keaton accepted on his behalf and gave a heartfelt speech honouring her friend. “I think it's safe to say Woody Allen is an anomaly,” Keaton said. She praised him especially for creating strong female characters and then got bleeped for using salty language and ended with singing the song 'Make New Friends' to symbolize her 45-year friendship with the filmmaker.
U2 won the Golden Globe for Best Original Song. Bono and the boys wrote 'Ordinary Love for Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom', the biopic about the life of Nelson Mandela. They of course talked about Mandela in their acceptance speech, explaining how their 30+ yr relationship with the anti-aparteid revolutionary influenced the song. The Edge said that the group first started working for the late South Africa leader, Nelson Mandela when they were teens in the '70s. "It's taken us 35-years to write this song."
Jared Leto won the 2014 Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a 'Supporting Role in a Motion Picture' for his role in 'Dallas Buyers Club,' marking his first win and first nomination. He returned to movies after 6-years absence to play a transgender AIDS patient in the movie.
Beating well established hits such as The Big Bang Theory, Girls and Modern Family, new show Brooklyn Nine-Nine was the surprise winner of two Golden Globe Awards lastnight.
Surprise of the night went to the recipient of the 'Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Comedy or Musical', star Andy Samberg couldn't hide his shock as he collected his award.
'12 Years a Slave' won best film (drama) at the Golden Globes, with while Cate Blanchett took best actress and Matthew McConaughey won best actor. American Hustle led with three awards.
