Technology has made it easier for anyone to call themselves a DJ if they remix a track on their laptop, but these women have broken ground and stereotypes with their beats and passion for conquering the male-dominated music world.
Here are the six female DJs who need to be on your radar and your playlists!
DJ Rekha is a pioneer in the South Asian club and underground scenes with her Basement Bhangra parties in New York City. She's been dubbed the "Ambassador of Bhangra" for combining bhangra and Bollywood with electronic music through her innovative and cool approach.
Another icon in India's EDM scene is DJ Pearl. She rallied her fellow female DJs for her Steel events, where they can play their music and work in solidarity. DJ Pearl and musician husband Nikhil Chinapa launched one of the first EDM and house parties, Submerge, which showcases new talent. Follow her music here.
DJ Angel is one of the foremost Bollywood DJs out there. She's done official remixes for films like Aashiqui 2, Jai Ho, Boss and Bullet Raja. DJ Angel started out as a drummer and found her interests in house and trap music, which punctuates her recent musical style. Her recent remix of "Manali Trance" is an absolute banger.
4. DJ Fizza
DJ Fizza is one of ANOKHI's earliest supporters, and she's been one of Canada's most in-demand DJs. She's highly adept at blending influences, as she mixes Bollywood with hard house and EDM.
DJ Fizza told us about the struggles facing the EDM industry and copyright, saying, "It's so important to buy your music, support the artists and appreciate the artists hard work and dedication. House music is all about remaking and remixing original tracks, from early disco tunes to present day where a lot of 90's R&B is being sampled. But you always have to give credit where credit is due."
DJ Kayper is one of the most in-demand DJs right now. She's played big bashes for Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin and even spun at the Cannes Film Festival. Kayper is a self-taught DJ who has risen to become one of the best scratch DJs in the world. You can find more of her wicked music here.
DJ Anjali with her partner, The Incredible Kid, run their Andaz parties featuring bhangra, Bollywood, reggaeton and more. DJ Anjali has opened for huge acts like Major Lazer, Skrillex and A Tribe Called Red. She calls herself the "dancer's DJ," and DJ Anjali's sets are wickedly fun. They mix in so many influences! Check out the duo's work here.
