Oscar Red Carpet Hits, Misses & A Whole Lot Of In-Betweens
The Academy Awards — a night all fashionistas look forward to — took place Sunday, February 22, at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. As stars crammed the red carpet, I sat in anticipation for what was to become a pretty dull fashion night except for one or two showstoppers that made my tuning in worthwhile.
Hits
L–R: Emma Stone in Elie Saab, Rita Ora in Marchesa & Felicity Jones in Alexander McQueen
There's no denying Hollywood's "it" girl Emma Stone can do no wrong on the red carpet, and Sunday night was no exception. The relatable actress made a striking mint green embellished statement that was the perfect complement to her fiery red hair. The Elie Saab gown was exactly what I had hoped for, made both glamorous and chic with its elegant long sleeves and alluring thigh-high slit. Rita Ora knocked it out of the park when she made her red carpet Oscars debut a power-packed one in her mermaid-shaped Marchesa. The jaw-dropping gown demanded attention with its impressive train. Fun girl Felicity Jones wasn't playing around when she brought out the big guns, opting for this voluminous McQueen piece of art.
Misses
L–R: Gwyneth Paltrow in Ralph & Russo Couture, Nicole Kidman in Louis Vuitton & Cate Blanchett in Maison Margiela Couture by John Galliano
Three ladies I've come to expect more from fell short when they made their fashion strut at the Oscars. While Gwyneth made me cringe with her prom-like, oversized, corsage-esque shoulder piece, Nicole, it seemed, forgot to take a look in the mirror before jumping into her limo. The actress appeared confused, with her style showcasing a bunch of mismatching accessory pieces that simply did not go together. But the biggest disappointment of all was one of my all-time red carpet faves, Cate Blanchett. Normally a force to be reckoned with, Cate failed miserably when she opted for a simple gown and paired it with a poor excuse for a statement necklace that was missing all of that usual Oscar-worthy sparkle.
Showstoppers
L–R: Jennifer Lopez in Elie Saab, Lady Gaga In Azzedine Alaïa & Lupita Nyong’o in Calvin Klein
Whether you love 'em or hate 'em, you've got to agree these gowns made you stand up and take notice. It was a bit of a shocker for me when Jennifer came out in a voluminous number and not the figure-hugging dress I'd have expected her to wear. Although I'm not a fan of overtly exposed décolletage, the gown in itself is a perfect Oscar piece. I would have preferred to see her in the Versace number Jennifer Anniston tried to pull off that night, though. The newly engaged Gaga brought her quirk factor when she paired an elegant Azzedine Alaïa gown (which took 25 people and ten weeks to make) with comical red gloves, and my jaw dropped for all the right reasons when fashion darling Lupita walked the carpet in a Calvin Klein creation made up of 6,000 breathtaking pearls.
Trends
Red
L–R: Dakota Johnson in Saint Laurent, Giuliana Rancic In Mireille Dagher & Rosamund Pike in Givenchy
If there were one stand-out hue of the night that I noticed, it had to have been the unmistakable bold, blood red colour. From newbies to Oscar nominees and hosts, the colour was definitely a fave of the night.
Indian Inspiration
Gowns
L–R: Patricia Arquette in Rosetta Getty & Zoe Saldana in Atelier Versace
It was interesting to note the Eastern style influences during the night, from sari-inspired gowns to jewels that sparkled with a South Asian touch.
Earrings
L–R: Marion Cotillard in Chopard, Scarlett Johansson in Piaget & Jenna Dewan-Tatum in Lorraine Schwartz
Guys in Colour
L–R: David Oyelowo in red D&G, Eddie Redmayne in navy Alexander McQueen & Jared Leto in lilac Givenchy
Don't forget to comment below and share with me your faves from the red carpet.
