Miley Cyrus won the top honour Sunday at the MTV Video Music Awards, but it was Beyoncé's finale performance and on-stage cameos from her husband and daughter that became the night's most memorable moments.
The 2014 MTV Video Music Awards were held at The Forum in Inglewood, California, last night and broadcast live on MTV.
Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj on the red carpet
Red carpet stand-outs included the vivacious Nicki Minaj, who graced the carpet in a snake-inspired dress, while Miley rocked a leather bandeau with matching leather pants. Taylor Swift stunned the carpet in a blue long-sleeved romper, but it was the bootilicious Jennifer Lopez who won us over with her killer bod in a metallic cutout dress. The outfit that missed the mark was Katy Perry's denim overload, which fell tragically below style.
Ariana Grande and Jessie J belt, while Nicki looks for a belt
While Ariana Grande opened the show with 'Break Free', Nicki Minaj created a stir by bringing her 'Anaconda' video to life with a rump-shaking performance, and then later a wardrobe malfunction when she performed with Ariana Grande and Jessie J for the girly track 'Bang Bang'.
Other live musical performances included Taylor Swift, Usher and 5 Seconds of Summer, as well as the electrifying collaboration between Iggy Azalea and Rita Ora to name a few.
Grammy award-winning band Maroon 5 also hit the stage performing for the VMAs. The band presented a live rendition of a single from their upcoming album V, from a special VMA stage that was crafted by Kia Soul.
MTV's tribute to Robin Williams
The tribute that left us teary-eyed was MTV's nod to Robin Williams' tragic passing. Before a commercial break, a video montage of the actor's most memorable roles played on the big screen.
Miley honored a homeless young man with accepting her trophy for 'Wrecking Ball.' He nervously read from notes and urged viewers to go to her Facebook page for information on how to donate to a shelter for homeless youth in Hollywood. The sight of Cyrus looking on tearfully from her seat couldn't help but seem just a wee bit self-aggrandizing to some cynics, but at least she was using the moment to point her figurative foam finger in a useful direction.
Beyoncé was honoured at the MTV awards as this year's recipient of the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, following a seductively memorable on-stage set. Past recipients include Madonna, Britney Spears, Beastie Boys and Justin Timberlake. Beyoncé, who bagged eight VMA nominations this year, winning Best Cinematography, Best Video With a Social Message for 'Pretty Hurts', and Best Collaboration for 'Drunk In Love' with hubby Jay-Z, surely put a stop to the divorce rumours when she accepted her award from him with a loving peck on his lips.
People have a lot to ponder on until next year, like whether or not Nicki Minaj had a wardrobe malfunction and how can Jennifer Lopez still look like this.
