Get the inside scoop on the best and worst dressed from the 2014 Metropolitan Museum Costume Institute gala.
Fashion’s biggest night of the year took place yesterday. The 2014 Metropolitan Museum of Art’s annual costume institute gala opened in celebration of the theme ‘Charles James: Beyond Fashion’. As the hottest celebrities walked the red carpet, the fashion world waited to see who and what would take their breath away.
Main themes spotted on the red carpet were expected: volume, pleats, trains in pure couture fashion along with chic minimalism, but of course no red carpet is without its rebels who this year pushed skin, sheers and short hems, along with a good dose of the wacky.
The Wow Factor
Dita Von Teese in Zac Posen/ luckymag
The burlesque star shows off her feminine curves in an exquisite Zac Posen mermaid gown. The designer whose dresses stole the show (rightly so) added creative detailing to die for. Check out the pleated fish tail and red border finishing of the gown.
Karolína Kurková in Marchesa/ onsugar
Our ultimate fav! This is how you make an entrance. The model kept her hair and makeup minimal to allow for the teal floral print creation do all the talking. This volume in interesting cuts and feminine folds was definitely made to steal the limelight and it did!
Picture Perfect
Rihanna in Stella McCartney/ hausofrihanna
Simply elegant, a toned-down Rihanna rocked simplicity with style in this figure-hugging Stella McCartney ensemble. The crop top off-set with the regal high neck and long sleeves paired with a pleated train skirt took our breath away.
An ode to the golden screen, Blake shimmers in this perfectly muted flowing creation by Gucci.
Sarah Jessica Parker in Oscar de la Renta/ thegloss
As we expected, Jessica comes red carpet clad in a ball gown cut but made it a chic one with this contrasting black and white by Oscar de la Renta.
Missed The Mark
Shailene Woodley in Rodarte/ becauseiamfabulous
Young girls should have fun with their fashion, but not with pieces that look like you've cut up your mother’s curtains!
Can’t believe our eyes but the new fashion darling, Lupita Nyong'o brought the drama, but fell short of the wow factor in this Prada tribal-inspired number.
Power Couples
David & Victoria Beckham/ onsugar.com
A picture perfect poster for ‘less is more’. Flawless in this strapless gown from her own collection, this smart cookie knows you don’t need frills or fuss when you’ve got eye-candy like David on your arm.
Charlene Theron & Sean Penn/ media4.onsugar.
Charlene killed it in this Dior strapless black and white gown. The drama of the train paired with the contrasting colour palette made us swoon.
Jay-Z & Beyoncé Knowles/ ibtimes
