Katy Perry came complete with an animal print roar and gold grill, looking elegant with a single thigh slit. Lady Gaga decided to tone down her entrance dressed in black paired with shades while Miley was confident enough to flash her tongue numerous times on the carpet.

The British boy band, One Direction was supposed to be the evening's hosts, they ended up presenting the first award: 'Best Pop Video' to Selena Gomez. After that, they seemed to have ditched the job. Instead, Kevin Hart, who hosted the 2012 awards, took to the stage once again. The comedian repeatedly claimed he was not the VMAs' host, yet he was the only presenter who took to the stage a number of times cracking jokes along the way.

Lady Gaga opened the show with her first time performance of the single 'Applause' with nods to her ARTPOP collaborators. Viewers got to witness a multitude of costume changes in the process. The return to stage after hip surgery did not hinder her performance. It was as expected, a flawlessly unpredictable Gaga. She opened the song in a white nun's habit and square headdress. By the time she finished the song, she was clad in a seductive thong bikini decorated in shells, wearing a long, mermaid blonde wig.
Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus go head-to-head for most outragous performance
If the site of Gaga's new curvacious bod didn't get you excited, Miley Cyrus took to the stage and kicked things up well beyond shock value as she appeared in a cartoon character bodysuit. The visual became awkward once the singer repeatedly kept sticking her tongue out and grapped her privates. Just when you thought it couldn't get weirder the young Disney star ripped off the bodysuit to reveal a nude plastic bikini with a foam finger as her only accessory. The singer proceeded to run the object along her privates as singer Robin Thicke joined her onstage to perform 'Blurred Lines'. What followed was an awkward, scene shocker of Miley mimicking a lap dancer.
Hart commented in response to the performance, "Miley better get a d–k pregnancy test after all that grinding," he joked after the singer performed "We Can't Stop."
Other performances that kicked in the night were Drake, Kanye, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Bruno Mars, Justin Timberlake who brought back a class act to the stage with a set of solo smashes and, yes, an 'N Sync reunion that all lasted for a good 20minutes… stella!
Carrying on the legacy of the Michael Jackson he was awarded the Video Vanguard Award. Pal Jimmy Fallon awarded the singer and nicknamed him 'The President of Pop.'
