At the age of 10, Indian prodigy Tanishq Abraham has earned an American high school diploma.
Abraham, a homeschool student, and one of the youngest ever to graduate a U.S. high school, did so with a 4.0 GPA. The Sacramento, California, native has been homeschooled since the age of seven.
In March, he passed a state exam that certified that he had met the appropriate academic standards to receive his high school diploma. He received his diploma at a private ceremony in front of family and friends at the California Auto Museum on June 15.
Abraham told ABC News, "It wasn't easy because of the bureaucracy, but I have put a lot of hard work into this and I am very happy that I am finally graduating high school."
The young boy has very high ambitions. He scored well on the SATs and is finishing up the community college classes that he has been taking from the age of 7.
"I am going to finish my community college by almost next semester and then I will have my associate's degree, after that I will transfer to university," he said.
After completing his classes, Abraham hopes to transfer to UC Davis at the University of California to study medicine. "It would be nice if I could go to a place like MIT,” he says. “It would be really great, but I am so young so I can't stay in the dorms over there."
His mother, Taji Abraham, suspected her son was gifted, but didn’t know to what extent. At the age of four, he joined Mensa, a group for people with IQs in the top 2 percent of the population.
It was in Kindergarten that Abraham himself realized he had a special gift: "I could read books that were meant for second and third graders, I was also able to do math like second and third graders."
His mother chose to homeschool her son because he was far ahead of his grade level, and because other children had begun to tease and bully him. However, the family was careful to provide him with opportunities to socialize with kids his own age, including extracurricular activities such as boys’ chorus and swim classes.
"I really like home school," he says. "I know that a lot of people think that with home school you don't get the social interactions, but I have lots of extracurricular activities such as singing classes."
Abraham has even received a letter from President Obama congratulating him on his accomplishments. For this 10-year-old, his future looks nothing but bright.
“I would like to be a doctor, but I haven’t decided what type of doctor I’ll be,” he says. “Also a medical researcher, and president.”
