With daily stresses encompassing our lives, here are some simple ways to elevate your mood.
Stress is inevitable in our daily lives and manifests itself in various forms such as a driver with road rage that cuts in front of you, an aggressive co-worker or boss, or an argument with a family member or friend. Instead of letting it get the best of you and bringing down your mood, try these simple mood elevators that are quick, simple and fun.
1. Laughter is the best medicine: It's contagious, it's a natural mood enhancer and it's free and readily available in abundance without a prescription.
2. Music: Listen to your favourite music, whether it's a Bollywood tune or a Billboards chart hit, and sing out loud. You'll notice your mood change instantly and you'll feel happy.
3. Exercise: Endorphins are released during physical activities and are a natural mood enhancer. Doing aerobic exercise for five minutes a day is a great stress reliever.
4. Try something new: A new hobby or a new project will motivate you and keep your mind refreshed and energized. Achieving goals can be rewarding while enhancing your mood and helping you feel accomplished and successful.
5. Hang out with a pet: Pets give you unconditional love and loyalty. They make you feel happy and peaceful while you bond and play with them.
6. Meditate: Meditating makes you feel more centered and still and helps you be present in the moment. Simply relax and focus as you breathe in and out and clear your mind of all thoughts. Feel calmer and more relaxed instantly.
7. Attitude of gratitude: Showing gratitude on a daily basis will help you appreciate life in general and lift your spirits during times of distress. Adopt this attitude and practice it daily to feel more at ease during stressful times.
8. Altruism: Doing good for others without expecting a reward will make you feel good on the inside. This enhances your spirit and general well-being.
9. Surround yourself with positive people: Surround yourself with people who have a positive attitude and lift your spirits higher and stay away from people who constantly gossip or complain. You are the company you keep.
10. Focus on the present. Stressful moments surround us, be it in the past or in the future. Take the I'll-cross-that-bridge-when-I-get-to-it attitude and focus on the pleasure of the moment. Take into account the positive moments of your day, your afternoon, the hour. Stuck in a traffic jam? Use that time to make mental notes of your day. Or just indulge in your favourite tunes on the radio. Long meeting? Take a look around and be thankful that you have a job. Stuck with a bout of insomnia? Instead of watching the clock, take in the scene out the window. Relish in the serenity of the night. In other words, find ways to count your blessings in the present.
