Killing Hate With The Beauty Of The Saree & 10 Actresses Who Slay In One
Tanya Rawal is an Indian-American adjunct professor at the University of California at Riverside, and she's trying to reclaim the saree in America. Her mission seems to be working.
Tanya decided to start Instagramming pictures of herself in sarees hashtagging them #SareeNotSorry. What started as a mere teaching experiment has since inspired others. She was not expecting the hashtag to take off like it did, but she's very excited that others are following her.

Tanya is grateful for help from her family and friends. "My mom helped me organise the sarees. A group of her friends pulled out their simplest sarees and let me borrow them for this project. We call them the Saree Ladies of Baton Rouge. But my mom did all the hard work of fixing blouses and stitching on the fall to some of the sarees," she said.
Being a brown woman living in America post-9/11 is difficult, and there is an increase in hate toward immigrants. Several incidents influenced Tanya's idea, including the gurudwara attacks in Wisconsin, the police attack on Sureshbhai Patel in Alabama and the death of Parminder Singh Shregill.
"We are attacked for looking like we don't belong. And these attacks are justified with this idea that anyone brown is potentially a terrorist," she explains.

Rawal loves wearing her saree in many different situations, including while at work, and she says she's trying to kill hate with the beauty of the saree. "Most people praise the beauty of the saree. So it is a great position for me, because I can tell they feel uncomfortable with me, but the beauty of the saree makes them react kindly. I feel like it is equivalent of killing your enemy with kindness… I am killing hate with the beauty of the saree."

As the wife of the Nawab of Pataudi, Kareena is instantly expected to dress with class. She does this flawlessly. Kareena dazzled in the song "Main Heroine Hoon" from her film Heroine, where she wore a black, plain, sheer saree put together with a black sequinned blouse with a pink border.

Everybody's favourite actress, Deepika, has been wowing us with her looks since her debut opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Om Shaanti Om, but her most recognized look is from the song "Badtameez Dil" from Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani, where she wears a plain blue saree paired with a black blouse, much like Kareena's look.
The heiress is known for dressing rather scantily in very blingy outfits, causing many people to stare. And she did just this when she landed in India for the first time. When exiting the plane, Paris was seen wearing a rather mismatched jumpsuit. Paris put many to shame, though, when she changed into a saree to wow the Indian nation.
With a body like Priyanka's, it's almost impossible to find something that wouldn't suit her. Known as the "Desi Girl," Priyanka looked stunning throughout the film Dostana but even more so when she emerged in a saree. Teamed with a bra-style blouse, Priyanka's saree showed off her amazing figure while still keeping her look very conservative and Indian.
Shilpa Shetty may be residing in London now alongside hubby Raj Kundra, but the Indian beauty sure knows how to pull off a saree with ease. Shilpa has a trim post-baby body, and she says she works out to feel good — not to look good — and is an avid fan of yoga.
One of the most talked-about saree looks was the one Elizabeth Hurley pulled off when she decided to leave the blouse at home altogether and just wrap the saree around her. In 2007, she married Indian textile heir Arun Nayar. On her wedding day, she opted for a lehenga outfit, but she still manages to look stunning in a saree.

Mummy Aishwariya Rai Bachchan is the daughter in law of the prestigious Bachchan household, so she certainly would wear a saree more often than not when out at events. Of course, she looked stunning as Paro in the film Devdas, where she was adorned in jewelry and rich, expensive sarees.
Jessica Alba is a Hollywood sweetheart, and for her film The Love Guru, she wore a beautiful orange saree with a gold blouse. The film is about a boy raised in an Indian ashram who becomes a self-help love guru, and Alba plays Jane, who seeks this guru's help when her star hockey player becomes estranged from his wife.

When she first entered the industry, Katrina could hardly speak a word of Hindi, but while learning that, she also learned how to pull off the much-loved saree. No matter what colour or style, she always dazzles when she wears one. In the film Rajneeti, Katrina plays a chief minister — so not only does she wear a saree in the film, but she also pulls off an unglamorous saree and still looks beautiful.
Sushmita Sen has been around for years and has always been immaculately dressed, but the film Main Hoon Na shows her in a different light. She plays a school teacher and therefore dresses in a various sarees throughout the film.
